Gourmand Geets : Under The Mango Tree

On a lazy weekend, looking for a new place to eat, we checked into Burrp and were immediately arrested by the enticing picture of Under The Mango Tree (or UTMT, as it is otherwise known). And so we went off to 3, Laurel Road, Richmond Town. It was a little difficult to find, and we went around in circles for 15 minutes before we called them for directions, but when we got there we were charmed. Completely.

Nestled in a quiet corner of Richmond Town, in a lovely property, with 3 restaurants and  a small nursery, just a stone’s throw away from the snarling traffic jams of Bangalore, this is a true oasis. Under The Mango Tree is in the courtyard behind the main building, and true to its name, is under a massive mango tree. The decor is simple and the tables have been placed very smartly around the tree, giving it the importance it deserves. The customers are protected from falling leaves (and maybe, mangoes too?) by a glass roof supported by wooden beams, which also allows the restaurant to be bathed in natural light, filtered through the protective branches of the tree. We obviously chose a table right next to the tree!

When the menu came in our hands, we spent a few minutes resisting the temptation to over order and finally decided to start with a portion of bruschetta and grilled lamb chops served with hummus. We also ordered some apple fizz, an interesting drink with apple juice, lemonade, soda and fresh mint leaves – refreshing and perfect for a sunny afternoon. I’ve had some pretty bad bruschetta at restaurants renowned for their Italian cuisine, but this bruschetta was simply delightful. The bread a warm, crunchy toast, the tomatoes fresh with just the right amount of olive oil, basil leaves and topped with a sprinkling of mozzarella cheese.

When the lamb ribs were served, we simply stared in awe for a minute. Three gorgeous ribs, with a generous mound of hummus on the side and enough pita bread for a main course! It was time to dig in and lose ourselves in culinary heaven!

By the time we had worked our way through the starters, we were almost ready to throw in the towel, but we decided to be brave and share one thing from the main course menu. Shifting gears a bit, we ordered a portion of Burmese khowsuey. It was perfect.

Unfortunately we were too full to even try sharing a dessert, so I guess I shall have to wait until next time to try one. And a I hope the next time is in the evening so I can lean back in the chair and stare at the stars winking from behind the branches of the mango tree.

Would I recommend it? You bet! If you are looking for al fresco dining in a quiet restaurant, Under The Mango Tree is your place.
